When it comes to the most popular cat breed in Australia, owners are
overwhelmingly choosing a cat without defined parentage. The domestic (moggie) is
our most common cat. Of the purebreds, the Australian Mist is a popular choice, as
is the Russian Blue and Tonkinese. The Persian’s affectionate and loyal nature keeps
them in the most popular cat breed list. The Maine Coon is also very popular thanks
to its temperament. The sleek, athletic Siamese and playful Abyssinian make them
favourites too, while the Birman, which has been described as a dog-like cat, is also
popular with Australian owners.
Pet tag supply company Bow Wow Meow reports that the five most popular names
for female cats in 2014 were Bella, Molly, Coco, Sophie and Lily. Owners of male cats
can be heard calling for Max, Charlie, Oscar, Simba and Tiger.
