According to the latest figures we can find from the Australian National Kennel
Council, the most popular breed of dog in this country is the Labrador (close to 5000
of these dogs were registered in 2013). Australia’s next favourite breed is the
Staffordshire Bull Terrier and then the German Shepherd. Coming in fourth is the
Golden Retriever followed by the Border Collie. The Cavalier Kings Charles Spaniel is
Australia’s sixth favourite breed, while the American Staffordshire Terrier comes in
at number seven.
When it comes to popular pet names, simple seems to be the way to go for most pet
owners. Bow Wow Meow is a large supplier of pet tags in Australia and around the
world, and each year it releases its top name list. In 2014, Bella (for female dogs) and
Charlie (for boys) topped the list. Rounding out the top five for girls were Ruby (in
second) followed by Molly, Lucy and Rosie. For boys, Max was the second most
popular dog name, followed by Buddy, Oscar and Jack.
