Cats famously hate water, don’t they? Well, not always. Despite their reputation, some cats love to play with or in water. If you’ve noticed your cat has a fascination for running taps, likes to stare at her reflection in the bird bath or she keeps batting a paw in her water bowl, then you’ve got a cat who likes a bit of water play.
Some behaviourists believe that some cats are fascinated by taps because from an evolutionary perspective running water is safer than still, and wild animals will always drink from flowing streams rather than still bodies of water. This might also explain why your kitty is dipping her hand in her water bowl – she’s trying to move it around to test its freshness. If you notice her doing this, try changing the water in her bowl more often, to keep it fresh.
Another reason she likes playing in the water is because its fun. She might like seeing the water ripple and splash. She might like the unusual feeling on her paws or the sound of trickling.
If your cat is a water lover, keep a few bowls around the house (it’s a good idea to put them on a mat or in a room where it won’t matter if she splashes water around). You can also head to the pet shop and check out some of the water dispensing products you can buy. Your cat will love these and they are better for the environment and your back pocket than leaving a tap running for her to play with.
